The Legend Of Tarzan is a 2016 American action adventure film.
The trailer opens with an establishing shot immediately setting the location of the film. The soundtrack begins fairly mellow and mysterious conforming to the action genre. As the scene fades to black it cross cuts to a medium shot of leaves and vines being rummaged about by a animal. This connotes wildlife, fear and strength. We then begin to hear a narrative, who states "The jungle consumes everything", as we see a long shot of mountains with silhouettes standing on top. The fog surrounding the mountains connotes mystery, suspicion and fright conforming to the action genre.
A medium shot is used to introduce the Gorilla's. Impressive CGI effects have been used to get a realistic interpretation of the wild animals. Due to proliferation film companies are able to create these extreme effects with their large budgets. The lighting is fairly dark which makes the Gorillas look aggressive and frighting. There is one strobe of light which makes one Gorilla in particular stand out. CGI and aggressive antagonists conforms to the action genre. The soundtrack still appears as mellow and slow pace to keep the trailer engaging and interesting.
A long shot shows a tree house in the middle of nowhere. Sound effects have been created making sounds of lightning and thunder. This creates a more tense and suspicious atmosphere. The lighting is also extremely dark as it reflects the weather in shot. In editing they create flashes as the shot fades out which successfully reflects lightning. Shot reverse shot is used to show the Gorilla and baby meeting for the first time, the close up shots show their emotions more clearly.
A narrative voice states "He is no normal man" which implies he has many strengths and powers in which everybody else doesn't have. A fast pace panning shot is then used to show Tarzan running through the jungle and swinging through trees. This demonstrates his bravery and masculinity as he makes his way through the jungle. The soundtrack becomes more powerful as it reflects Tarzan himself.
This close up shot shows the protagonist as muscular, strong and powerful, conforming to the action genre as the protagonist is usually a hero in which saves the world from the antagonist. The lighting continues to stay dark and eerie as he is introduced by name 'Tarzan'. This constructs his character as dominant and vigorous. The soundtrack has become much faster in pace and lower in pitch which suggests something is about to occur. A fast pace panning shot then shows Tarzan swinging through the trees extremely fast demonstrating he is chasing something or trying to save something. A montage of shots shows Tarzan finding Jane which introduces romance into the film. Weapons, violence and aggression are all involved in this montage which reflects the action genre.
As the trailer continues a close up shot shows a Gorilla aggressively roaring into a humans face. The close up is effective as we are able to see the exceptionally large sharp teeth and the fear in the humans eyes. Sound effects have been created to emphasise the Gorillas roar and what powerful and aggressive creatures they are. There is then a montage of shots which show violence and hostility, including slow pace shots and fast pace shots.
Match on action is then used to show confrontation between Tarzan and a Gorilla. The first glance is a close up shot of the Gorilla where we can see the aggression and strength within him. This positions the audience to feel slightly uneasy about how Tarzan will come out from this. The second shot also shows the Gorilla to an advantage as it throws Tarzan through the jungle. However, the last shot shows a medium shot of Tarzan holding the Gorilla down. The lighting is extremely effective as its creates a dark effect where Tarzan looks like a silhouette. This positions the audience to feel less anxious as Tarzan has overpowered the Gorilla.
The trailer ends with a character explaining through his dialogue "King of the jungle...Tarzan...Tarzan!" We then see a slow motion medium shot of Tarzan and a Gorilla battling it out. The scene then fades to black before we see them reach each other as the directors want to leave audiences engaged and excited. Tarzan is given prevalence as he is the main character and who writers want you to sympathise with and connect with the most. The medium shot is effective in showing their body language, it appears to be strong, masculine, confident and dominant. At this point the soundtrack also becomes more intense as it positions viewers to feel anxious and suspense.
