Suicide Squad is a 2016 American action film. The film stars famous hollywood actors/actresses including Will Smith, Jared Leto, Cara Delivigne and Margot Robbie. The film is based around the government bringing all the supervillains together to try and save the world.
The trailer opens with a zoom out panning shot of a jail door, as the audience we see the guard closing the spy hole with the character shouting and screaming aggressively. This demonstrates he has done something wrong and illegal. The guard is dressed in protective armour and headwear implying he is a fully equipped professional guard. The soundtrack throughout the trailer is Queen 'Bohemian Rhapsody', conforming to the idea of 'Rock N Roll' and the action genre. The guard is shown giving no sympathy to the criminal as she slowly and slyly closes the spy hole.
We are then shown a medium shot of Harley Quinn sitting crossed legged on her jail bed. The book, pink fluffy slippers, china tea set and pinky up subvert the idea that she is a criminal and doesn't relate to the environment/location she is presented in. We are able to see bars and basic surroundings suggesting in prison there is nothing to do or see. The diegetic sound is of a characters dialogue in the background demanding to be "Let Out!". This helps viewers understand what prison is like and how much people want to get away from it. The pink and blue in her hair also presents her crazy personality and different and edgy.
Match on action is then used to show Will Smith looking out the little window in his prison cell. The lighting is used effectively to shine onto the character leaving mysterious shadows around his figure. The yellow jumpsuit demonstrates he is a criminal and has committed illegal crimes. Outside the window it is raining helping describe the mood present in shot. The soundtrack continues to play throughout the trailer. Close up shots help show his emotions effectively as depressed and lonely. The over the shoulder shot also shows him looking outside to freedom, freedom in which he doesn't have.
We are then presented with a close up shot of a character covered head to toe in tattoos. This makes his appearance appear as more different and outgoing. We also see him holding fire which implies that he is 'not normal' and can do things not everyone else can do. This puts him at an advantage when committing crimes. The lighting fades to black as he puts the fire out creating more tension and suspense. It works effectively as the fire is the only source
of light present in shot. There is no diegetic sound or dialogue at this moment
in time, only the continued soundtrack which is non-diegetic sound.
We the audience, are then positioned to view the
character from a guards perspective. The shot shows a CCTV camera looking into
a prisoners cell. It's a close up shot as it shows the character coming
extremely close to the camera and through his dialogue shouting at the people
on the other side. This demonstrates that prison is for fairly 'weird/damaged'
people and can affect them mentally. The trailer has been introducing
characters effectively through cross cuts and fades to black. I feel this
successfully keeps the audience engaged and excited.
A cross cut is used to take us to a completely
different location which has a huge contrast to the prison. We first see the
meeting through a long shot of a window. Rain is streaming down the window
conforming to the mood and types of characters in which have been introduced.
Through their dialogue we understand that the characters who have been presented
to us are "Bad Guys" and "The worst of the worst". From the
meeting we get a clear perception that they want to bring together all the
criminals and use them to help save the world.
Through a cross cut we are back at the prison, we
see armed guards with many different weapons and defence objects. There are
multiple guards presents representing how much back up they need to face the
bad guy. They way they beat and attack him implies they have no sympathy or
remorse for him. Sound effects are created to emphasise on the beatings to get
a bigger effect. A medium shot is used to show this scene as we are able to see
the body language of all characters, Will Smith is shown to be weak and in pain
compared the guards who look completely in control.
The non-diegetic sound at this point in the trailer
is a characters dialogue/narrative. We are able to understand more about the
types of characters in the film. They are described as "Shoots People,
Crocodile and Eats People". This positions us to see the types of crimes
they have committed and why they are bad guys in the first place. A low angle
shot is used to show Will Smith pointing a gun towards us, this makes us look
weak and powerless compared to him. A close up shot is used when presenting
crocodile as we are able to see the details in his costume. The dark lighting
also creates more suspense and excitement. A low angle shot is also used to
show the character jump out of the water as it drags someone down. This makes
the guard look weak compared to looking superior at first. The lighting
is also very dark, with only a flash light present. This helps keep the
location and seeing appear creepy and unstable.
"Burns People, Possessed by a witch, She's
just crazy" are also main characters who have their own different
appearances and ways of being criminals. The fire is evolving from the outside
to the centre making they characters face take you eye the most. The bright
colours of the fire and the fast pace it moves conforms to the genre of a
action film. A medium shot shows Cara Delivigne looking creepy and unusual,
they imply she is possessed positioning the audience to understand she is
mentally damaged. The dark lighting helps with the effect of the possession as
its scary and unnatural. Lastly through a close up shot we are shown Margot Robbie
laughing and acting strange. She is described as crazy enabling viewers to
understand she's a little different and effected. The sound is still
non-diegetic and narration over the top of the scene.
We are then shown Margot Robbie and multiple
guards. She is still dressed in a orange jumpsuit implying she is still in
prison. Through her dialogue she suggests "The voices are telling me to
kill everybody...Im kidding...Thats not what they really said". This
effectively helps they audience and guards understand that she is crazy and
acts in an unnatural way. The close up shot shows her facial expressions as
excited and finding the situation humorous. The guards on the other hand look
more nervous and anxious as they are in the company of a mad and insane
criminal.
A tracking shot is used to follow helicopters
shooting bullets and light beams into the city. This helps create more
excitement as it begins to introduce the genre more clearly being action. The
pace starts to increase in the cross cuts of shots and soundtrack. This
emphasises on action and created more exhilaration. We then see ruins of
the city and fires in streets. This informs bombs and other types of
weapons/destruction are being used. Many action films use these sort of weapons
as they are usually based around hero's and villains.
Harley Quinn portrayed by Margot Robbie is
presented as a strong powerful character due to her appearance, angles and
dialogue. A low angle shot is used to show her travelling up in a lift. This
positions her to look superior and weak compared to everyone below her and us
the viewers. Her body language of waving implies sarcasm and humour in her
character. This helps her appear as a independent, dynamic and vigorous
character. We are then shown a side profile shot of her aiming at something.
The quick pace positions her to appear as brave and strapping. The explosions
and lights conform to the action genre but also make her look cool and
superior.
An over the shoulder shot shows us a character
looking like 'The Joker'. Most of the viewers will know that 'The Joker' is an
extremely dangerous villain who is not to be messed with. This links well to
the genre of action as the villain is being used to save the world. He
also describes his deadly weapons as "Toys" demonstrating he finds it
fun and thrilling to destroy things and murder people. Sound effects have been
created to show gun shots, explosions and speeding cars. These all conform to
the action genre as all the props and objects are used frequently
throughout.
A high angle shot is used showing 'The Joker' lying
in a circle of different weapons including guns and knifes. The diegetic sound
at this point is 'The Joker' laughing in hysterics suggesting he enjoys the
thrill and pleasure from committing crimes. The camera is zooming out from the
shot in a circular motion so the audience can see the quantity of weapons. The
high angle also makes him look fairly less superior compared to all the
weapons.
Match on action is used effectively when Will Smith
loads his weapon. Impressive sound effects have been created to show the farce
motion and way in which he prepares himself for war. The close up shots
are used to show they audience what he is doing and where about he needs to
load the gun. The orange jumpsuit still connotes prison and that he is not
free.
The trailer finishes with a montage of shots
including explosions, shootings, fire, fighting, damage and excitement. The
soundtrack continues throughout with the same song played by Queen.
The final scene shows
Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie smashing into a shop window to steal a
handbag. When asked "What the hell is wrong with you?" through her
dialogue she responds "We're bad guys, its what we do". Through a
medium shot we can see the destruction caused and her body language showing she doesn't care about her actions. Her outfit
suggesting 'Daddy's lil nightmare' also connotes she commits crimes and isn't
your typical moral person. As the trailer finishes, giving Harley Quinn
prevalence viewers are left sympathising and connecting with there the most.
She's the last character you are left thinking about persuading you to go and
see the film. I feel this trailer is extremely successful with keeping audiences
engaged throughout and has made me want to see the film in a cinema.
