NERVE-Trailer Analysis

Nerve is a 2016 crime/thriller film directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. It stars Emma Roberts and Dave Franco revolving around the game 'Truth or Dare'.

The trailer opens with a fast pace zoom into a laptop screen, this already conforms the genre of thriller as it's quick and intense. A computerised voice enters the scene explaining what Nerve is and how the game works. The narrative voice is fairly suspicious and scary due to the computer effect used to create the voice. As the soundtrack becomes faster in pace and louder, the voice repeatedly states "Are you a watcher or player?". This implies the voice gets in your mind and persuades you to play.
We then see two girls on facetime discussing the game, one states its "cool" the other describes the game as being "sketchy". This demonstrates there is a catch to the game and their isn't a winning prize.
The soundtrack becomes much more upbeat and interesting, shot reverse shot is used between two friends saying "You need to take risks". We see her other friends sniggering in the background which suggests the main character doesn't usually do much or lighten up. The audience are then positioned to be inside the computer screen, with a close up we see the character click player instead of watcher. This immediately involves her in the game and creates tension for the audience watching the trailer.

We are then shown the characters first dare, through her dialogue she states "Kiss a stranger for five seconds?!" in a worried anxious voice. She doesn't seem to keen on the dare she has been given. This makes viewers understand she doesn't know what she has signed up for.  A panning shot zooms in to show a attractive looking character, her characters dialogue/ diegetic sound demands "Just kiss him!" this shows she is prepared to do the dare. The soundtrack becomes upbeat and helps portray the situation she is in.  As the scene becomes quiet a long shot shows the two kissing enabling viewers to see their body language. The two start laughing as Emma Roberts says "Ok, Bye!"

Shot reverse shot is used to show the two in conversation, the game wants them to partner up and play together. A low angle close up shows him offering her a helmet, this demonstrates he rides a motorcycle making the trailer appear more thrilling and exciting.
A close up shows the male characters cheeky smile gripping your attention even more, though his dialogue "Lets see what else happens" makes you want the female character to join him and carry on playing the game. We then see a close up shot of his phone saying 'Take her to the city', this enables the audience to realise the game is actually making them play against each other and makes us unsure of what will happen at the end of the film. A birds eye view shows the location in which is New York. The soundtrack uses the same upbeat music when showing this and then the two on a motorbike.

The trailer uses a close up shot to show the two screaming with excitement as they speed through the city on the motorbike. Sound effects are used to show speed and conform to the thriller genre. This makes the film more exciting and interesting. The trailer still appears as harmless as the dares aren't to extreme. Her next dare states "Try this dress on". It acts as a normal dare as she has no hesitation.
A close up shot shows her blowing a kiss to her camera and audience as she implies she is up for anything. However a high angle shot shows the two go into panic as they realise their clothes and money is gone. A sound effect is used to show her phone get a notification. The dare is to leave the store for over $2000. The serious scene turns into a humorous one as she states "Technically it says we just have to leave the store". A low angle shows the two walking out the changing room with just shoes on. There is then a montage of shots showing them leave the store in just their underwear. This demonstrates they have completed the dare without having to steal the outfits.
Shot reverse shot shows a couple entering a lift, we then see the main characters looking extremely embarrassed as they are seen almost naked. A montage of shots shows them running through the city with fans taking pictures of them as they have all watched their dares. Sound effects and editing techniques have created camera shot sounds and camera flashes. Words constantly flash into the trailer describing them as 'fearless' and all you have to do it 'play the game'.
The soundtrack becomes slower and quieter as someone explains "someone died in Seattle playing the game". We are shown a low angle shot of a person lying on train tracks with a train heading towards him. This makes him look powerless and inferior. The trailer then dips to black becoming completely silent, this creates suspicion and anxious tension.

The trailer becomes a lot more serious and frightening, the two start asking questions about bailing which makes the audience think there will be a catch. A medium shot shows Emma Roberts walking very quickly while on the phone, she finds out her parents money has gone leaving her confused and upset. She starts panicking asking police officers for help, however they have watched her and want her to continue playing. We understand the only way they can get out of the game is to win it. This conforms to the thriller genre as it's become a lot more tense and mysterious. The diegetic sound introduces the computerised voice stating "We control your life" This implies they must do everything the game tells them to whether its life threatening or not.  We then see a montage of shots from hanging of high buildings, blind motorbike racing and jumping from building to building. The diegetic sound is screams and shouts from both characters as they are anxious and nervous.

The trailer ends with the two standing opposite each other, the computerised voice states "Players show us your weapons". A medium shot shows Emma Roberts pull out a gun and points it towards the audience,  she looks frightened and scared as we assume its actually pointed at Dave Franco.  The scene fades to black showing the title and release date, the trailer ends on a thrilling cliff hanger as it doesn't want to give too much away. I feel this trailer has been extremely successful with persuading me to see the film, it appears fun, exciting, scary and thrilling all at the same time.
